Robin Hood Gardens
Poplar, London, United Kingdom
1972
Architect
Alison and Peter Smithson
Completed
Unlike a string of other Brutalist buildings by other well-known architects, including the Barbican Estate and Arts Centre, applications to have the Robin Hood Gardens given a listed status were denied and plans for its demolition were approved in 2015.
One part has been completely demolished and what I have photographed here is the only remaining wing of the estate. The place feels surreal to the point that I couldn't understand if it was still lived in or not. During my visit I bumped into few residents and they confirmed that a lot of people still live in the flats waiting for the whole building to be fully demolished.
The development that will replace it will be denser still. Maybe in the future it to will be too torn down and replaced.
